First Man (Saturday July 20)

This haunting and beautiful biopic follows astronaut Neil Armstrong and his family as he goes from being an engineer for NASA to leading the front for America’s expansion into space. Ryan Gosling plays the man himself with Claire Foy as his suffering but supportive wife, with both roles played to perfection.

First Man has some stunning visual effects and cinematography to back up its stellar writing and performances, with the film looking like it was made in the 70s rather than the late 2010s. This is backed by an extraordinary score by Justin Hurwitz, which is surely the best of the year. All these elements combine to create a film that’s both technical but gorgeous. Catch it from July 20.

Overlord (Friday July 19)

A huge July for Sky Cinema also sees WWII Nazi zombie horror Overlord hit the service. This brutal and bloody gore-fest follows a group of US WWII paratroopers who are tasked with taking back a radio tower from the enemy and unwittingly stumble into a nightmarish Nazi experiment gone wrong.

This alt-history horror takes its video game-style premise and goes all-in, providing plenty of shocks and violent action to keep you entertained on a Friday night. Overlord includes plenty of stunning practical effects whilst also balancing them out with genuinely interesting characters and breathing some life into the tired zombie genre.

A Star Is Born (Friday July 12)

One of 2018’s biggest films, A Star Is Born is the latest version of the story and stars Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga as two singers who propel each other to fame and stardom whilst also falling in love.

Even if you haven’t seen the film yet, you’ll have definitely heard some of the songs, which were big hits in their own right. A Star Is Born establishes Bradley Cooper as a genuinely good director and Lady Gaga as a powerhouse actress, with both leads giving heartbreaking and powerful performances. Grab the tissues and get your singing voice ready for July 12.

The Girl In The Spider’s Web (Friday July 5)

This adaptation of the latest from the Millenium series sees Claire Foy step into the role of Lisbeth Salander, the Swedish punk hacker who is this time tasked with tracking down the users of a programme that can control the world’s nuclear weapons.

The Girl In The Spider’s Web sees the character move into a James Bond-style story, with director Fede Alverez (who you’ll know from gruesome shocker Don’t Breathe) injecting the film with plenty of spy-thriller action. Foy is effective as Lisbeth, providing enough arse-kicking intensity to easily match up with Rooney Mara and Noomi Rapace.
